Layering vs. Nesting: How Your Technique Affects Quantity

There are two main ways to use crinkle paper in a gift box, and they use different amounts:

Layering (most common)

You place a base layer of crinkle paper, arrange your items on top, then add a light covering layer. This uses the most paper but gives the fullest, most professional look. Add roughly 20–30% more paper than the table above if you want a thick top layer.

Nesting

You create a "nest" or depression in the crinkle paper and place items into it. This uses less paper overall and works well for single-item boxes or when the item itself is the visual focus. Use the lower end of the table ranges for nesting.

The 10–15% Overage Rule

Professional gift packers always order 10–15% more than their calculated need. Here's why:

• Some paper gets compressed or tangled during packing and can't be reused
• You'll want to fluff and adjust — this uses more than you expect
• Colour consistency matters: running out mid-batch and topping up from a new pack can cause slight shade variation
• Buffer stock means you're never caught short before a peak period

So if your calculation says you need 2kg, order 2.5kg. The cost difference is small; running out mid-order is not.

Tips for Courier-Safe Packing

If your boxes are going out via courier (Courier Guy, Aramex, Dawn Wing, etc.), you need slightly more crinkle paper than for hand-delivered gifts. Items shift more in transit, so:
